Ok… Now what?
My plan was to come back to Mexico for a brief period. I wanted to do an offshore sailing passage. Because of that, I didn’t lock down a place to live. I was going to couch surf with friends.
Life felt a little all over the place (to be fair, that’s how I’ve chosen to live the last while). After a bit of moving around, I finally settled into a friend’s home.
Ok, now what?
I was lost. I’d said I would figure it out when I got to Mexico, but I really had no idea how. Things were pretty volatile for a bit, and some circumstances made being here alone feel very overwhelming.
After some self-exploring and a real focus on changing my energy, I was determined to get on a damn boat.
I talked to a friend who worked at the La Cruz Marina, and he told me to go look at the posts people had put up. I went that same day, and sure enough, a boat called Mi Casa was looking for crew in and around the PV area.
It wasn’t my goal (I wanted to leave Mexico), but it was a start. I met up with them that evening to see if it would be a fit.
Having a dog can be an issue for many captains, and that was made clear by this vessel captain. So I brought Ruby with me, and after a cerveza, he agreed to let us both crew for a bit. We spent 24 hours at anchor to make sure everyone was comfortable, and then we took off for Isla Isabel.
I had my momentum back. A few days into the trip, with some encouragement from Leo (great dude, btw), I finally found the courage to post in the Facebook sailing groups. That’s how my friend advised finding opportunities.
The response was overwhelming! Many captains weren’t in Mexico, so those were obvs a no-go, but I heard from two who were:
A captain from Quebec planning to sail to French Polynesia in mid to late May. (A little close for the weather window, but he’d done the crossing before, so I trusted his timeline.)
A captain looking for crew to sail the Sea of Cortez for six weeks, April to May.
I FaceTimed with both, and they were lovely. The only catch: they were both in Baja. But at least they were in the same marina…
I’m in Mexico without a home. Who cares what part of it I’m in? I wanna sail!
I guess I’m going to Baja…
